Tang was 20 jaar schilder in het Rode Leger. De uitdrukkingen op de gezichten van de kinderen, met een paar rake penseelstreken weergegeven, verraden een jarenlange ervaring als portrettist. Hij kreeg kritiek omdat de portretten van leiders niet sociaal-realistisch genoeg waren. Sindsdien verbeeldt hij zijn ironische kijk op het eindeloze vergaderen en partijleiders door het portretteren van kinderen achter vergadertafels of microfoons.
