Narelle Autio groeide op in de zuidelijke kuststad Adelaide. Op de kunstacademie bekwaamde zij zich in de technieken van de schilderkunst. Na het behalen van haar diploma werkte Autio echter voor diverse plaatselijke kranten als fotograaf. Een aantal jaren werkte zij als fotojournalist in Engeland en Amerika. In 1998 keerde zij terug naar Australië. In het Australische leven, en met name aan de kust, vond Autio een grote bron van inspiratie voor haar werk.
