Lin Tianmiao

Lin Tianmiao often uses material such as thread or twine to meticulously wrap everyday objects. Wrapping them in white thread, she hints at the “ever-present tension between tradition and modernization in today’s China.” An intensive process, the thorough encasing of objects echoes the menial and repetitive tasks of traditional female domestic labor, but that in the end produces nothing more than obsolete objects.
Lin Tianmiao also works collaboratively with Chinese video artist, Wang Gongxin, 3. creating the Here? Or There? series in 2002. These colour photographs are an ornate meditation on urban and organic change, remembrance, ghosts and the adorned body.
